What do the flags in a boat mean?

We got crew flags!! It tooks us a while, but we have finally decided to get them on Ambrym.

If you don't know about flag courtesy in boats, here is some info (followed by some funny topics about our flags):

- THE ENSIGN This flag is the national flag (or maritime flag) of the country where the boat is registered. It should always be visible (traditionally removed at sunset and pulled back up at sunrise) on the back of the ship.

- COURTESY FLAG When in a foreign country, the local flag must be located under the starboard spreader. When arriving in a new country, before registering with the authorities, a Quarantine flag should be shown instead (yellow flag)

- CREW FLAGS On the port side, other flags are allowed: Showing the nationality of the crew, club memberships, local flags, etc.

AMBRYM'S FLAGS - some fun facts:

> Ambrym is registered in Waterford, Ireland But nobody in the sailing community seems to know the Irish flag!! Everybody confuses it with a faded Italian flag and screams "Buongiorno!" to us!

> After 3 years onboard, we have finally decided to get crew flags. Why so long? Mostly because I (Ana) am not fond of flags in general!! Too much political meaning... so I have been refusing until now. But I do enjoy seeing other boat's nationalities!! So there we go

> First time we considered crew flags? When last year for one week we were: Ireland, Spain, Austria-Fiji, Australia-UK and Bosnia! But we couldn't find all the flags locally
