Boat works III - More surprises - water!

I promise. This post is not going to be so disgusting as the last one!!

As we said, we found many surprises when we started living in Ambrym. We spent the first weeks basically working on repairs: rewire the VHF installation, we solved several drain blockages, we replaced a lot of cabling because the battery charger wasn't giving as much power as it should, we found that the outboard motor wasn't working...

One night we went to bed hearing a thunderstorm coming….

We both come from rainy places, and after a very hot day, listening to the rain while cosy in bed waiting for the temperature to go down for a bit, didn't sound too bad. And summer rain smells so good...

Until we started hearing the water running inside, And feeling - the biggest shower was inside directly over our heads.

Oh yeah!

Nothing we could do but to find buckets and salad bowls and catch the water and wait for it to dry!

It took several attempts, a lot of patience and learning to seal the teak deck over the whole summer. It doesn't help that we only had rain about once a month so we had to wait a lot in between repairs to check if it worked!! (better that, than having a shower in bed every night, not complaining at all!) but we are quite sure we have it sorted now.

The leaks were focused on some areas, mostly where a repair had been done a couple of years ago. Also, the seals around the hatches needed to get redone. But it was a lot of work to do: removing the seals, grinding, priming, gluing, sealing again, sanding...

Lloyd is an expert on Sikaflex and teak now we can say!!
